Frequently Asked Questions

Advice and answers from the Moores Ortho team

Why should I bring my pet to you?

If you were to have orthopaedic surgery yourself, you would want to be treated by an experienced and qualified consultant surgeon. In the veterinary world there are no restrictions on who can perform orthopaedic surgery, regardless of their level of training or how much experience they may or may not have. At The Moores Orthopaedic Clinic we can guarantee that you will see, and your pet will be treated by, an experienced RCVS-recognised Specialist surgeon. RCVS Specialist status is the highest level of specialist qualification in the UK. We are the consultant surgeons of the veterinary world. You can find out more abut RCVS Specialist status, and check if a surgeon is a specialist or not, by clicking here.

We have designed the clinic specifically for orthopaedic surgery. We have facilities that your local GP vet practice and many other referral centres will not have. Features that reduce the risk of complications and maximise the chances of a good outcome for your pet after surgery.

Finally, we promise to treat your pet like one of our own, and to treat you fairly. That means fixed prices for most of our procedures and a surgical guarantee in case of complications after TPLO, elbow arthroscopy, patella surgery and total hip replacement.

How do I bring my pet in to see you?

If your pet has an orthopaedic problem and you would like us to assess him or her, then we will need a referral from your local GP vet. Please ask them to arrange a referral to The Moores Orthopaedic Clinic. Your vet should be happy to arrange this and is obliged to facilitate referral. Please let us know if you need any help from us with this or if you would prefer us to contact your vet.

What do I do if I’ve been referred to another orthopaedic vet?

We’re still happy to see your pet even if you have been referred to another orthopaedic clinic or been advised that you don’t need an external referral. It’s ultimately your decision where your pet is treated and your vet should not be offended if you ask to be referred directly to The Moores Orthopaedic Clinic. Please let us know if you need any help from us with this. You may like to take a look at Andy’s blog on the CMA review of the vet sector for more on the intricacies of the referral process.

Are you part of a corporate group?

No. Many GP vets and referral clinics are owned by large corporate groups but we are an independent clinic with no ties to any other company. If your vet has referred you to us, it is solely because they value our experience, expertise and facilities and not for any other business-related motive. See Andy’s blog on the CMA review of the vet sector for more on the referral process.

How much will the treatment cost?

Treatment costs will vary depending on the requirements of your pet. Most of our surgeries are fixed-price, making it simple to work with insurance companies and giving you peace of mind without the worry of unexpected additional costs. These are listed on our Prices page. Some of our procedures also have a surgical guarantee. Because we are an orthopaedic-only and independent practice we can keep our fees very competitive compared to other referral centres. We will always provide an estimate of costs once we have assessed your pet and if you need an idea of costs prior to your appointment then please let us know. We do not think you will find better value specialist care in the south east!

Will your fees be covered by my pet insurance?

Almost certainly yes, but do check your policy carefully in case there are any exclusions or limits on cover. If your pet has previously been treated for the same condition and you have since changed insurance companies, then you may not be covered. Some insurance policies will limit how much they pay out for certain surgeries. If you are unsure about your level of cover then you can talk to our team and we can investigate this for you.

My insurance company has directed me to another clinic. Can I still come to you?

Yes. Some insurance companies, such as some underwritten by RSA, have a preferred network of referral clinics which offer the insurance company favorable rates. Your insurance company may direct you towards one of these clinics but you are under no obligation to use them. RSA may charge you £200 for not using their network, in which case we will refund this to you.
